So, here's the story:
It was cold that day. One of those days where the sun is present but the wind stings all skin exposed. There was an energy about the ranch, more people gathering than usually cared to be outside with the horses. Today was the day Jeremiah was set to ride Samantha, a colt of two, for the first time. Waiting for the show. "What show?" I ask. "We're here to see if Jeremiah's gonna get bucked off." "Oh, right."
Jeremiah brushed and saddled Samantha as usual. Everyone seemed to be feigning confidence and ease, just going through the motions, but then I realized I was the uneasy one. We put the kiddie saddle on Jennifer so I could give Eli, the one year old, a ride down to the enclosure for the show. Maybe if the colt saw me riding Jennifer, she'd be less opposed to Jeremiah mounting and riding on her back...
There was some waiting around as a makeshift fence was assembled to complete the ring. Jeremiah click-clicked and whoa-ed a couple times, commanding Samantha in circles, right and left. This was all normal, easy. An adjustment to the saddle needed to be made, no big deal.
All of a sudden, less than a second, the wind shifted, saddle went sideways, and the colt started to buck. Powerful legs straight in the air, like I've never seen in my life. Like in a movie, I saw Jeremiah's hands fly up on impact, shoulders hunched as he fell backwards. "Fuck," was all I could think, "She got him."
Jennifer, sensing Samantha's trouble started to shift and neigh, shaking her head and jostling back and forth. Thinking she was going to bolt, I held on to the kid with all my might, scared shitless, but staying calm. Whoa, Jennifer, Whoa.
Jaime got the kid down, and I realized hardly any time had passed at all as the colt was still bucking but Jeremiah was down, against the fence now. His dad cursed all hell and kicked the discarded saddle before taking a knee by his son. "Is your chest okay, where did she get you, that bitch, where does it hurt?" A hundred questions. I stood frozen, between the now huffing and heaving colt and Jeremiah. Samantha was so confused, ashamed almost, as she stood across the enclosure, frozen as I was. Jeremiah was spitting blood, "Yeah, Dad, it hurts."
I went to comfort Samantha and then went to the hospital with Jeremiah. Chipped tooth, cut up tongue, bruised ribs, cut up chest. All blame was put on human error, the colt had every right to buck that way however unfortunate the result. Jeremiah will be back, in two weeks, for another show. We'll see what happens this time.
